Rain, Rain, Go Away!

10.29.14

If your wedding is coming up, we would bet that you have constantly been checking your weather app to see if you’re going to be the unlucky bride that gets rained on. But we are here to tell you that rain isn’t as scary and unlucky as you think it is! In fact, some cultures consider rain on your wedding to be lucky. We have faced quite a few rainy day weddings and not one of them ruined the special moments of the day. However, we understand this still worries people, so we have come up with a few things to keep in mind if you have rain on your big day.

  • Always have a Plan B – Whether this means renting a tent or simply bringing a pile of umbrellas, always have a rain plan. A tent over an area you thought was going to be open air won’t necessarily ruin your plans but could even add some more details to your design. Be prepared for your plan B to happen so that you aren’t disappointed on the day of.

  • The lighting can create some awesome photos! – Some of the best photos have been taken under an overcast sky. The lighting makes it easier for photographers to get the perfect shot. If the rain is coming down hard, just embrace it and have some cute rain themed pictures! We have seen some creative shots of brides and grooms laughing it off and dancing in the rain.

  • “As soon as you let go of the fact that you can’t control the weather, you will have a good time, ” says Meredith Tanton of Sweetgrass Social. Meredith experienced this first hand during her own big day when the rain just didn’t want to stop. She had dreamed about her design for over a year, but at the last minute, she had to switch to her backup plan. After the initial disappointment, she was able to accept the rain and her backup design and she ended up having the perfect night! Guests had no idea that the rain had even messed up anything.

Below are some of the Sweetgrass Social rainy day weddings. All of these turned out to be beautiful and happy weddings!

Make It Yourself Monday: Perfect Pumpkins

10.27.14

The pumpkin is the quintessential Fall decoration, but how do you incorporate these in your wedding decor? Obviously most brides wouldn’t want a carved jack-o-lantern just sitting in the middle of the table! However with some adhesive and glitter you can transform an ordinary pumpkin into something truly beautiful!

What You Need:

  • Mod podge (for simple designs like the above dipped pumpkins, polka dots, or stripes)
    OR
  • Double sided adhesive paper (for more precise designs like a monogram)
  • Pumpkin of any size
  • Glitter
  • Paintbrush

What You Do:

For Simple Designs

  • Make sure your pumpkin is clean and dry before you start
  • Apply mod podge in your preferred design
  • Apply glitter generously to the mod podged areas (best to this over newspaper or a trashcan)
  • Use the paintbrush to remove excess glitter
  • Once dry, apply another coat of mod podge to ensure glitter doesn’t get everywhere

For Precise Designs

  • Again, clean and dry your pumpkin
  • Cut out your design from the double sided adhesive paper
  • Remove adhesive from one side and stick carefully to the pumpkin *Note-make sure the adhesive gets completely into the grooves of the pumpkin
  • Remove other side of adhesive and apply glitter
  • Use paintbrush to remove excess glitter

You can experiment with different colors and sizes of glitter to achieve the perfect pumpkin for your decor! Enjoy!

Wedding Venue History: Lowndes Grove Plantation

10.24.14

After simply seeing pictures of Lowndes Grove, you are sure to fall in love. Currently owned by Patrick Properties, Lowndes Grove is one of the most popular wedding venues in Charleston and definitely one of our favorites. The plantation is located in historic downtown Charleston along the Ashley River giving a beautiful backdrop to weddings and events. The beautiful white house, built in the 1700s, is surrounded by 14 acres of oak trees.

The earliest known existence of the plantation is in 1701 when Patrick Scott received a grant for the land known as Grove Farm. Following Scott, the land was given to John Gibbes who had built a house and garden on the land. However, the house was destroyed during an invasion of the Revolutionary War.

It was eventually passed down to George Abbot Hall, an immigrant from England, who actually built the white house around 1786. Although it has seen some modifications and updates, this is the same house that is used today. The plantation had a name change to Lowndes Grove when William Lowndes, a Congressman, purchased the land in 1803. The property was finally purchased by Patrick Properties who now use the plantation as an event venue.

The house has 2 and a half stories and is decorated with period furnishings leaving the house with a historic plantation feel. You can step out the front doors to the gorgeous main lawn or take in the river views on the large piazza. Lowndes Grove Plantation is a unique piece of land that will leave guests hoping for a second visit.
